© For the end of the year book, (check Meeting Overview: April 20,2007 for more information,) I heard of an awesome idea from Elizabeth.
Right now, we are currently going to submit whatever we feel like with one random theme. What if we do this but have one guideline? Every piece that is submitted into the book must have this one particular item in it; the item may be the main point of the piece, or may just be sitting on a table in the background. This would make it fun to search through each piece to find the item and would keep the book a little themed, but still wide open for anything at the same time.
There are many items that we can choose to be the one item, but here are a few that we were brought up.
- hourglass
- quill pen
- feather
- apple
- globe
My favorite is the hourglass which I think would be a cool idea. If you have any ideas or have a favorite, comment and I will add any new ones to the list. Hopefully we can decide on one so we can start making arrangements for our book.
If we do decide to do this, then I have an awesome idea for the cover art. I could draw the one item, whatever it is, and have whatever else around it. Currently I am picturing a dragon curling around an hourglass, but whatever we choose will effect the picture.
I don’t know what you all think of this idea, so please comment and share your thoughts!
Sounds interesting. I suppose the item would have to impact our story a little more than if your walking down the hall and see an hourglass and make no more mention of it. Then it doesn’t seem to apply to the theme. Have any suggestions on how to base our stories around these items?
I think it would be okay if it was just mentioned in the story.
I like the mentioning it idea. That way, if there is a story you really want to put into the book, you could simply add an Hourglass to it and it would have the tie-in. Something like an hourglass could be added without really changing the story.
Other option for the book: Noelle’s logo. Did anyone like that idea? Or did you prefer something new? If you go to this website, you can see all of the options available for font, etc…

Melissa, I think it would depend on how you word it whether you would be able to do something like that, you know? It might seem a little odd and out of place to say something simple that points it out plainly, but I am sure we are all capable to give it a little more detail to blend it in more to the story. Like this for example. You could say: As instructed, I walked down the long hallway and noticed an hourglass sitting on a table. Sounds a little weird? But we are all better than that! Here is a sentence that means pretty much the same thing, but with a little more depth: As Lyra had instructed me, I walked down the hallway of wall hangings, passing once a lone table with an hourglass sitting proudly in its solitude atop it. See the difference? It could mean a change in character, or it could personify something or other to make a point *nods* and you never have to mention it again.
Anyway! -that was a long explanation- On the topic xD I like the hourglass idea the best, too. Still, since you said the dragon curling around it thing I have neat little images in my head for every one of them xD But yeah. Hourglass is my vote.
Ok, I guess that sounds good. How did the hourglass idea come up in the first place…?
Huh? That was strange. Anyway, I think that would be a great idea. I like the hourglass idea. I’m thinking of submitting my “Cathedral” short story (not yet posted, or written entirely), and it’s good to catch me in the planning stage.
I would like to collaborate with the artistry. I ain’t as refined, but I draw most good like as if I write!

Like the links, Lizzie! I know, off subject. In case anyone is curious, my short story is no longer based on “Cathedral”. Now it’s inspired by “Tapestry” by Carole King. 😀
when does the artistry need to be in?
I have two ideas, Noelle help me out. One is an hourglass that acts like a time machine or the second is the hourglass acts as a portal to an unknown world. Tell me if either is lame.
The portal wouldn’t be to bad if you tie it into time

Please stay with the hourglass because I have started the story. It is more a portal into a world that is in the medieval times. Dragons RULE!

Yeah, that’s what I meant, Desirae, and of course, if somebody wanted to make the whole story center around the hourlgass, they can do that too.
I was talking about it with my dad while trying to think of more ideas for “the object” when I was running through the ones that were brought up at the meeting. Apple, globe, feather, quill pen. Then I was thinking of quill pen and that reminded me of Oblivion, (the most awesome game ever!) because you can get basically anything in that game, and I really want a quill pen. So I started thinking of Oblivion objects and the second one that I really want is an hourglass…I told my dad and we started talking about how awesome that would be.
Okay, how would you like to work that out?
I kind of like the time machine one…
